The Vergelegen Route

Vergelegen Route to give Oudtshoorn a new tourism advantage

The Vergelegen Road, which joins the N12 to R328 offers an amazing opportunity for tourists to experience the true flavour of the Klein Karoo in a single 18km journey taking one through some of the most beautiful scenery and typical klein karoo topography anywhere in the region. The route offers a real opportunity for tourists to get up close and personal with a myriad of different aspects to this beautiful part of South Africa – the drive takes one past a series of small scale farms that include ostriches, jersey cattle, boerperde, milk goats and one of the last remaining untouched ostrich palaces in the district, and then, once the farmland is passed by,  pristine wilderness begins – now one has the chance to see a wide variety of wildlife as three nature reserves are situated along the extent of the road in Liidikwe, Buffelsdrift and Zwartberg View – often one can see creatures as diverse as giraffe, eland, black wildebeest and Zebra grazing on the hillsides as the road meanders through the red hills,  crossing the Kango River numerous times. and of course, lest we forget, two of Trip Advisor’s top ranked lodges in Thabile lodge (ranked one) and Zwartberg View Mountain lodge (ranked two) are situate on the Vergelegen Road.
